The prose shelf. Same taste, different craft axis: voice and structure stand in for painterly art. This profile is young — the early picks are chosen as much to test what lands as to be read.

Your taste, in one breath Dark, singular-vision genre fiction — morally-grey protagonists, decaying or collapsing worlds, cerebral cyberpunk and the consciousness/identity thread. The open question is whether styled prose (Neuromancer) or deep worldbuilding (The Captive's War) carries a book — the first few reads exist to answer it.

Caught Stealing — Charlie Huston ✎ 1
Crime noir · ordinary man in over his head
Hank Thompson, book one. A washed-up ex-ballplayer bartending in New York agrees to cat-sit and ends up holding something several factions will kill for. Axis-2 bullseye: an ordinary man whose choices compound into violence. The leanest of the three and the highest rated — the core evidence that propulsion, not style, is the prose craft requirement.
Edition: Hank Thompson #1 of 3
Connects to Pulp and Deadly Class (comics wishlist, same crime-noir seam)
Reader's noteReally liked it, my favourite of the trilogy.
★
Six Bad Things — Charlie Huston ✎ 1
Crime noir · consequences arrive
Hank Thompson, book two. The moral slide continues and the past catches up.
Edition: Hank Thompson #2 of 3
Reader's noteReally liked it.
★
A Dangerous Man — Charlie Huston ✎ 1
Crime noir · the close
Hank Thompson, book three. Rated the weakest of the trilogy, but the wrap-up was explicitly praised — a structural-payoff data point on the entry that otherwise scored lowest.
Edition: Hank Thompson #3 of 3
Reader's noteWas good, nice wrap up to the trilogy.
★
Blood Meridian — Cormac McCarthy ✎ 1
Literary weird western · mythic apocalypse
The book that proved the lobe transfers. The Glanton scalp-hunting gang across the 1840s borderland, and Judge Holden. Hits axes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 as hard as anything on either list — and settles the open question of whether the weird-western half of the comics taste exists in prose. It does. Density recorded honestly as a cost paid, not a draw.
Connects to East of West, The Sixth Gun, Pretty Deadly (the comics weird-western vein)
Reader's noteGood book, a little tricky to follow but enjoyed it, the characters and the themes.
★
Neuromancer — William Gibson ✎ 1
Cyberpunk noir · the foundational text
The cyberpunk anchor. Case, a burned-out console cowboy with his nervous system deliberately sabotaged, takes a devil's-bargain job to get it undone. Axis-2 and axis-3 bullseye, and the styled end of the prose craft axis — famously more textured than transparent.
Connects to Ghost in the Shell, Descender (comics wishlist); Tokyo Ghost (owned)
Reader's noteLoved it.
★
Tranny: Confessions of Punk Rock's Most Infamous Anarchist — Laura Jane Grace with Dan Ozzi ✎ 1
Music memoir · punk
Against Me! frontwoman's memoir, drawn from journals.
Reader's noteEnjoyed it. Conflicted story on life and transition.
★
Racing With Rich Energy — Elizabeth Blackstock ✎ 1
Motorsport · investigative
The Rich Energy / Haas F1 sponsorship debacle.
Reader's noteLiked it, great and quirky story and investigation.
★
We Breed Lions: Confronting Canada's Troubled Hockey Culture — Rick Westhead ✎ 1
Sport · culture exposé
Inside stories on hockey culture. The clearest structural deduction in the non-fiction set — content landed, construction repeated itself.
Reader's noteLoved it. Great inside stories about hockey culture. While important, I did find it get a bit repetitive.
★
Walking Disaster: My Life Through Heaven and Hell — Deryck Whibley ✎ 1
Music memoir · pop-punk
Sum 41 frontman. The high-water mark for the music-memoir lane.
Reader's noteLoved it. Great story on Deryck's life through rock and roll.
★
Fahrenheit-182: A Memoir — Mark Hoppus ✎ 1
Music memoir · pop-punk
blink-182. Explicitly rated below Walking Disaster — useful calibration that the lane works but candour and stakes vary.
Reader's noteWas good, not as good as Walking Disaster.
★
The Hidden Girl and Other Stories — Ken Liu ✎ 1
Digital consciousness · identity
Currently reading. Short fiction on uploaded minds, identity and personhood — the same thread as Pantheon and Ghost in the Shell. Establishes the collection as a valid unit alongside the novel.
Connects to Descender/Ascender, Ghost in the Shell (comics wishlist); Pantheon
Reader's noteAbsolutely loved this book. The sci fi and tech was so good but shining light were the characters. Conflicted and sympathetic, and the stories so well written

Already Dead — Charlie Huston
Vampire noir · damned protagonist
Joe Pitt casebook #1 of 5. Vampyre clans carve up Manhattan and Joe Pitt works the gaps between them. Same author as the Hank Thompson trilogy — three read, all liked — so the craft fit is evidenced rather than predicted. Crosses the new crime-noir seam with the dark-fantasy-with-a-god-problem vein, which is the one lobe still untested in prose. Joe Pitt is damned in the literal sense. Complete at five books.

17
The Killer Inside Me — Jim Thompson
Noir · first-person killer
Axis 2 taken further than anything on either list. Lou Ford, a mild small-town Texas deputy, narrates his own violence with total calm. The morally-grey axis pushed past grey. Lean, propulsive, complete, pure dread, and foundational to the whole crime-noir seam the Huston books opened. Axis 3 is the weak one: nothing is collapsing except him.

18
Exhalation — Ted Chiang
Digital consciousness · personhood
The proven lane — the Ken Liu comparable. Short fiction on personhood, determinism and minds that are not human. The Lifecycle of Software Objects is the closest thing in prose to the Descender/Pantheon thread. The lane is evidenced, not inferred: The Hidden Girl and Other Stories is the direct comparable and is being read now. Axis 6 bullseye — Chiang's stories are built to land, and short fiction has no third act to rush. Craft fit via lucidity rather than style. Two honest misses: no damned protagonist (axis 2, the strongest predictor) and contemplative rather than dreadful (axis 5).

Blindsight — Peter Watts
First contact · consciousness as liability
The rigorous version of the consciousness thread. A crew of the cognitively modified sent to meet something that may be intelligent without being conscious. The hardest-edged treatment of personhood on this list, and genuinely dreadful in tone. Complete. Flagged: dense hard SF with a heavy load of neuroscience — a real craft-axis cost given density is a price paid rather than a draw.

Butcher's Crossing — John Williams
Western · obsession · indifferent nature
The literary-western lane Blood Meridian opened. A Harvard dropout finances a buffalo hunt into the Colorado mountains and the expedition turns into an obsession that consumes everyone on it. 32
The Captive's War — Book One: The Mercy of Gods — James S.A. Corey
Big-canvas sci-fi · worldbuilding
Up next. The worldbuilding end of the craft axis, and currently the untested one — the propulsion-over-style finding rests on Blood Meridian and Huston, not on this. Reading it is what tests whether deep worldbuilding substitutes for voice.

33
The Blade Itself — Joe Abercrombie
Grimdark fantasy · torturer protagonist
Glokta is an axis-2 bullseye. Inquisitor Glokta — crippled by torture, now a torturer himself — is as close to Seven to Eternity's moral register as prose fantasy gets, and the trilogy ends bleak and complete. Flagged: persistent dark comedy runs through it, the same tonal looseness that makes Mad Science Division a caveat on the comics pull list. Tier three placement is the tone, not the quality.

The Fifth Season — N. K. Jemisin
Apocalyptic fantasy · structural ambition
Axis 3 bullseye, complete trilogy. A continent that ends the world on a schedule, and the people who can quell or cause it. Axis 3 as strong as The Road, and the trilogy is complete with a deliberate landing — axis 6. Flagged twice: extended second-person narration is a distancing device, and it is pointedly thematic about oppression, which is the Punk Rock Jesus polemic register rather than the dread register.

The Book of the New Sun — Gene Wolfe
Dying earth · torturer protagonist
Perfect on axes 2 and 3; tier three on craft. Severian, apprentice torturer, exiled across a dying earth beneath a fading sun. Axes 2 and 3 as pure as anything in prose, and the sub-genre is the dark-fantasy-with-a-god-problem vein. Placed at the bottom deliberately: it is the most difficult prose on this list — unreliable narrator, buried structure, deliberate obscurity — and Blood Meridian already established that density is a cost paid rather than enjoyed. Ranked by fit, and the craft axis is what pulls it down.
